The 6 best short haul family-friendly holiday destinations

1. Greece: The Family Favourite

A view of Palaiokastritsa, Corfu

Why parents love it:

Best for: Families of all ages looking for a holiday where parents can truly switch off

It’s no surprise that Greece topped the list of our favourite family destinations. With thousands of sun-soaked islands scattered across a turquoise-hued Mediterranean Sea as well as a culturally-rich mainland, delicious food and sone of the best all-inclusive family resorts in the world, Greece is somewhere families return to time and time again.

When it comes to choosing where to head, Corfu was a top pick for families as well as Crete, Kos and Skiathos. On the mainland, history-loving teens and adults will enjoy Athens or head to Halkidiki for fly-and-flop holidays in luxurious beachside resorts.

“We enjoyed Corfu when the kids were 6 and 10. We went into Corfu town for a trip out but mostly just entertained ourselves by the sea (which was lovely and warm) or by using the hotel facilities. We all came back feeling happy and recharged. 11/10 - we would love to go back.” – Mum of 2 Natalie McDermott

Where to stay on Greek family holiday:

Few holidays mix adult luxury and relaxation with family-friendly fun like Ikos Resorts or Sani Resort – two resort brands that parents discuss in revered tones and always recommend, using words like: “expensive but so worth it!”

"It has to be Sani resort in Halkidiki or any of the IKOS resorts," says Carol Jaji. "They have amazing facilities and activities for children, the staff are amazing and so attentive, and the food is great. They really do think about everything for children of all ages, which means as a parent you can switch off and not worry about packing everything."

My favourite place to go with kids is Sani Resort in Greece. It’s the only place where I can properly disconnect and enjoy myself too.

Over on Crete, Daios Cove is a dreamy destination with a complimentary kids club or try Star Beach village Resort if you want a waterpark included in your stay, and for larger families there's The Peligoni Club in Zakynthos where you can stay in villas, but still make use of all the facilities. Other resorts our parents raved about include Grecotel Daphnila Bay in Corfu and Olympic Palace Hotel in Rhodes.

Greek family holiday package:  Seven nights, at the 5* Ikos Dassia in Corfu, from £6199 for 2 adults/2 children (includes €53pp Environmental Fee, payable locally), travelling on selected dates between 1 October - 31 October 2026 inclusive. Why parents love it:

Best for: Families who want a multi-generation all-inclusive holiday

If you're looking for maximum holiday for your money, Turkey is hard to beat.

Value for money remains front of mind for families, who are increasingly looking at the total cost of their holiday rather than the headline price alone.

Mark Hall, Head of Product and Sourcing at British Airways Holidays

Long-loved by families for its sunshine, spectacular coastline and exceptional all-inclusive resorts, it's a destination where everyone can truly switch off. Think lazy days by the pool, children happily disappearing off to kids' clubs and waterparks, and evenings spent enjoying great food together overlooking the Mediterranean.

Dalaman, Antalya and Bodrum are among the most popular gateways to Turkey's family-friendly coast, while resorts around Fethiye and Olu Deniz are especially popular with MadeForMums parents. With short transfer times, beautiful beaches and hotels that cater brilliantly for babies, children and teens alike, it's easy to see why so many families return year after year.

"We love to do a big all-inclusive family holiday in a Turkey every couple of years," says Jessica Antonietta Szkoda. "The grandparents, adult siblings, and all the grandkids together! The all-inclusive package means everyone truly gets a break with no cooking or cleaning and the resorts have something everyone can enjoy. We always have a fantastic holiday and always look forward to the next one!"

Where to stay on a Turkish family holiday:

The Turquoise Coast in the Dalaman region of southwestern Turkey is a hugely popular holiday destination thanks to its breathtaking blue lagoons and beautiful beaches. Antalya, known as the gateway to the Turkish Riviera, blends beaches and lively towns while Bodrum and Marmaris are also much-loved holiday hotspots.

Our parents particularly recommended Hillside Beach Club in Fethiye, Liberty Hotels Lykia in Olu Deniz, TUI Blue Tropical, and Holiday Village Turkiye in Sarigerme. If resorts aren't for you, Turkey also has many dreamy holiday villas as well as the option to book a private or shared cruise along the Turquoise Coast.

"I really want to gatekeep this place so I can book and it doesn’t sell out, but Hillside Beach Club in Fethiye is hands down the best place I have ever visited," says mum Rachael Austerberry. "There are activities for all ages and staff bend over backwards to help and are so friendly, plus food is incredible for adults too. It seems expensive, but it is well worth the money once you are there."

Whatever kind of family holiday you're looking for, Spain offers an unbeatable combination of sunshine, convenience and choice.

"We went to Mallorca a few years ago with a 2 and 3 year old," says mum Jennifer Ann. "It was perfect for that age: short flight, short transfer, early evening entertainment, everyone was very good with children and there were apartments big enough for us all."

Where to stay on a family holiday in Spain:

The islands of Menorca, Mallorca, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are top Spanish island picks for families, while on the mainland the Costa del Sol remains the top spot for British families followed closely by the Costa Daurada sounth of Barcelona.

Our readers were keen to recommend Biomar Sensatori on Mallorca for families with younger kids as well as Holiday Village Majorca in Cala Millor. In the Canary Islands mum of three little ones Natalie Clarke raved about Barcelo Corralejo Sands in Fuerteventura while Mel Corbo recommended Estepona, which she described as "extremely family friendly" and with a lovely old town that kept her older child entertained too.

The Algarve remains a favourite for its beautiful beaches, relaxed pace and resorts designed with families in mind, while Madeira is ideal for those looking to venture a little further and discover a unique island. With its lush landscapes, volcanic coastline, cable cars, dolphin-spotting boat trips and year-round spring-like temperatures, the island offers a refreshing alternative to a traditional beach holiday and is particularly popular with families travelling with older children.

Madeira is an underrated choice. It has year-round appeal, beautiful scenery, and plenty for families to do beyond the beach, from coastal walks and boat trips to exploring Funchal.

Mark Hall, British Airways Holidays

"We love Madeira," says mum Sam Dhanilall. "There's plenty to do for kids of all ages, it's easy to get around and the tours of the island are amazing. The island has great weather all year round and the food was lovely too."

And mum Natalie McDermott agrees: "We went to Madeira last year when the kids were 7 and 11 and fell unexpectedly in love with the island. It was an enriching trip and there’s lots to do like the CR7 museum, the botanical gardens, mooching around Funchal, a walk to learn about the levadas (waterways) and a cable car ride."

Expert tips for planning a perfect family holiday

Family discussing places where to to for vacation

Mark Hall, Head of Product and Sourcing at British Airways Holidays, shares the trends and tips shaping family travel for 2026 and 2027.

Look beyond the headline price

"Value for money remains front of mind for families, who are increasingly looking at the total cost of their holiday rather than the headline price alone."

Mark says families are considering everything from all-inclusive options and loyalty rewards to deposit requirements and cancellation policies when deciding where to book.

Choose a hotel that's designed for families

"For many families, the hotel's amenities are now just as important as the destination itself."

When comparing hotels, look out for:
• Kids' and teen clubs
• Waterparks and splash zones
• Interconnecting rooms
• Baby-friendly facilities
• Swim-up rooms or private pools

Book early for the best choice

"Booking early can be one of the best ways to secure value, particularly for families who have a specific destination, hotel or room type in mind."

Booking ahead can also help spread the cost and secure the most popular family room categories during school holidays.

Think about what your children will gain

"We're also seeing families look for holidays that offer something more enriching for their children."

Whether it's learning to swim, trying new foods, hearing a different language or taking part in sports activities, many parents are now looking for experiences that help children learn and grow.

Consider a multi-generational holiday

"Multi-generational travel is also booming, with grandparents travelling more frequently with children and grandchildren as families look to spend quality time together."

Ad

Villas, larger family suites and all-inclusive resorts can be a great option when travelling with grandparents.

Destinations to watch for 2027

According to British Airways Holidays, some of the fastest-growing family destinations include:

"This year, we’re seeing the strongest growth in family holiday searches across several European destinations," says Mark Hall, "including the Canary Islands - particularly Tenerife and Gran Canaria - as well as Portugal’s Algarve, Malaga in Spain and Malta. Further afield, Mauritius is also proving increasingly popular with families."
