Welcome to Week 6 of Screen-Free Summer!

For our final challenge, we’re partnering with National Magazine Day to celebrate the power of stories, creativity and imagination.
This week, your challenge is to invent a completely original character, then bring them to life by creating an adventure of their very own using our free Character & Storyboard Sheet.
Screen-Free Summer week 6 challenge: Story & Imagination!
Who will your family create?
Download and print our free Character & Storyboard Sheet and work together to invent someone completely original.
Need a little inspiration? Flick through a favourite magazine and use a picture, character, headline or interesting fact to spark an idea. You could also take inspiration from a book or the world around you.
Maybe your character is a superhero with unusual powers, a mischievous monster, an adventurous pirate, a magical animal or something nobody has ever seen before.
Give your character:
- A name
- A personality
- A special talent or power
There are no right or wrong answers — the more imaginative, the better!
Now take your character on an adventure
Once you’ve created your character, use the storyboard to tell their story and map out the adventure they go on.
Where do they travel? Who do they meet? What exciting things do they discover? Is there a problem they need to solve or a challenge they need to overcome?
Children can draw or write their ideas across the storyboard to create a story that’s completely their own.
This challenge is all about encouraging children to think creatively, tell stories and discover where their imaginations can take them — whether their inspiration comes from a book, a magazine or the world around them.
Ways to make it even more fun:
- Take turns adding new ideas to the story.
- Give your character a funny voice or catchphrase.
- Draw other characters they meet along the way.
- Act out a scene from their adventure together.
- Take your character somewhere and imagine what they might get up to there.
The story can be as silly, exciting, magical or unexpected as you like. The aim is simply to get creative together and enjoy some imaginative family time away from screens.
