Pros

Cons

British brand Silver Cross is best known for its premium pushchairs, but its car seat range has grown considerably in recent years. The Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 is an all-stage rotating car seat, designed to take your child from birth to around 12 years, or 145cm.

It offers 360° rotation, extended rear-facing travel, integrated side-impact protection and a new comfort kit, which includes a sunshade, breathable mesh liner and seatbelt pad. With an RRP of £295, it sits at the more affordable end of the all-stage rotating car seat market, below premium rivals such as the Maxi-Cosi Emerald 360 Pro, £399.99.

To see how well it performs at different stages, we tested the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 with both a toddler and an older child.

About our parent tester

Sarah Tooze tested the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 with her 19-month-old and 6-year-old daughters on nursery/school runs and everyday errands in her family estate car. Sarah has been an automotive journalist for 18 years. When she’s not writing about the motor industry or testing cars, she covers travel, history and parenting, and has reviewed a variety of products for parents and children.

How easy is the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 to install?

As the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 car seat uses ISOFIX, it’s very quick to install. It took about 30 seconds to click it into place and set up the support leg, and there are green and red indicators to show whether it’s fitted correctly.

The manual includes simple diagrams to follow and there’s also a demo video on the Silver Cross YouTube channel.

How well does the 360° rotation work?

The 360° rotation made it so much easier to get my toddler into the car. Most of the time, there was minimal fuss from her, and I noticed less strain on my back than with a non-rotating car seat.

To rotate the seat, you press a large button at the front centre of the base and turn the seat with your other hand. It swivels smoothly and clicks securely into place when it’s rear-facing.

When the seat is set up in high-back booster mode you can still rotate it 90° for your child to get in. However, this wasn't necessary with my 6 year old as she happily climbed in herself.

How comfortable is the seat for your younger child?

The seat feels very well-padded and supportive, with waffle jersey fabrics that are designed to increase airflow and breathability.

I particularly like the soft harness pads, which stop the harness from rubbing against my toddler’s skin.

The harness can be loosened using the metal adjuster button, which is hidden inside a small fabric flap at the front of the seat. I appreciate that keeping it hidden helps prevent unwanted adjustments from little fingers, but it does make the harness slightly fiddlier to adjust than on other car seats I’ve tested.

On several occasions, my daughter’s head slumped forward when she napped in the car, even though the seat was on its maximum recline setting. For her, the headrest didn’t seem to hug her head closely enough.

How comfortable is it for your older child?

My eldest daughter commented on how comfortable the car seat was, and she felt more cocooned than in the Joie Signature i-Traver high-back booster seat she normally uses.

Unlike with my youngest, the headrest seemed to provide the ideal support for her, and there was plenty of legroom and shoulder space for her as this stage.

I’m not sure if it will last until she’s 12, though, as the maximum height for the car seat (145cm) is slightly below the average for girls of that age in England. The Maxi-Cosi Emerald 360 Pro car seat lasts longer as it goes up to 150cm.

How easy is the seat to adjust as your child grows?

It was simple to remove the newborn insert, which has three parts to it, and set the car seat up for my toddler.

Converting the car seat to a high-back booster is more complicated, but I could still do it in under 10 minutes.

I watched the Silver Cross video to check how to do this, as the manual wasn’t clear about how to adjust the sprung-loaded harness and store it in the seat.

Everything stows away neatly, though, and my eldest child was comfortable in the seat. The headrest height is also easy to adjust using the grey handle at the top.

The support leg isn’t needed when the car seat is in high-back booster mode so you just have to raise it off the ground, which means all the adjustments can be made while the seat is installed.

How practical is the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 day to day?

The harness is spring-loaded, which makes it much easier to put a wriggly toddler’s arms in.

However, I didn’t love the position of the buckle. Instead of lying flat, the buckle cover makes it stick up, so I often had to lift my daughter over it and into the seat, or remember to move her to one side.

Like many all-stage car seats, the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 is bulky and reduces legroom for the front passenger when the seat is rear-facing. This wasn’t a problem in our estate car but in a small hatchback it could be quite restrictive.

The seat weighs 14.5kg, which is slightly less than the Maxi-Cosi Emerald 360 Pro car seat (15.5kg) but still heavy enough that I wouldn’t want to move it between cars frequently.

For me, these downsides were outweighed by the convenience of the rotating seat and its long lifespan.

What safety features does the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 have?

The Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 meets the i-Size safety standard, R129, and the original model was named best baby, toddler and child car seat by independent testing body ADAC in its Autumn 2022 test.

ADAC particularly rated the original Motion All Size 360’s side protection system, which is designed to help reduce the risk of injury in a side-impact collision. The seat was considered ‘average’ for preventing injury in a frontal crash though, and it’s worth noting that while the Motion All Size 360 is best in class with a ‘good’ overall safety rating there are car seats in other classes with ‘very good’ overall ratings.

The safety features I particularly liked were the option to keep my daughter rear-facing for longer — up to 18kg, or around 4 years — and Silver Cross’s car seat replacement scheme, which may help if you have an accident and the seat isn’t covered by your car insurance.

How well does the recline function work?

The Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 has three recline settings, although when it’s rear-facing the seat needs to stay on the most reclined setting.

To adjust it for an older child, you squeeze the handle under the front edge of the seat, then push or pull the seat into your desired position. and push or pull to your desired position. This is straightforward but my eldest daughter rarely naps in the car, so I didn’t need to recline it.

How easy is the seat to clean and maintain?

One practical feature I loved was the Hydro Protect seat liner. We’re not potty training yet, but my daughter’s nappy leaked during testing, and it was so useful to be able to whip the seat liner off and put it in the washing machine.

As the liner is quite thick, it took more than 24 hours to dry, but that wasn’t a problem as I simply switched to the summer liner which is included as part of the ‘Ultimate Comfort Kit’.

The kit itself is a great addition to the Motion All Size 360 as I’ve struggled to find a sunshade that fits my car, but this one does. My eldest daughter also appreciated the extra seatbelt pad.

How sustainable is the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360?

The Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 feels very sturdy and, although the warranty is for 3 years, it appears durable enough to last for years of use. Its all-stage design could also reduce the need to buy multiple car seats.

When the seat reaches the end of its life, Silver Cross has a dedicated car seat recycling service, which it says has saved more than 800 car seats from landfill since the scheme was launched in 2021.

Silver Cross has also opted for some eco-conscious materials. The brand states that the newborn insert is made from bamboo, while the seat’s outer fabrics are crafted from recycled plastic bottles.

Is the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 worth the money?

The Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 car seat retails at £295, which is competitively priced for an all-stage car seat. The Maxi-Cosi Emerald 360 Pro, for example, has a RRP of £399, although it slides in and out, as well as rotating.

Making a single investment, rather than having to purchase different car seats at different stages, appeals to me because it could work out cheaper overall.

The trade-off is that, at the newborn stage when your baby typically naps a lot, you can’t simply remove the car seat and carry it in the house or attach it to a pushchair.

Where can I buy the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 car seat?

MadeForMums verdict:

Overall, the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 feels like a worthwhile investment. It’s well-built, uses quality materials that feel comfortable and supportive, and comes with practical extras such as the summer liner for warmer weather and the leakproof liner for potty training.

For me, the extended rear-facing option and side-impact protection system were the standout safety features.

Both my children were happy in the car seat, and it does suit both their ages. For a younger baby who naps frequently, I’d personally prefer the convenience of an infant car seat that can lie flat and be fitted to a pushchair.

But if longevity matters more to you than portability, the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 deserves a place on your car seat shortlist.
