The Silentnight Healthy Growth Astro Eco 600 Pocket Mattress is a single children’s mattress offering medium-firm support, breathable comfort and a hypoallergenic sleep surface for growing children. With a 600 pocket spring core, quilted cover and Eco Comfort fibres made from recycled plastic bottles, it sits at the more premium end of the children’s mattress market and is aimed at parents looking for a longer-lasting upgrade from a basic foam or entry-level sprung option.
We tested the mattress with an 8 year old over 3 weeks to see how it performed for comfort, temperature regulation, support, cleaning and everyday practicality.

About our parent tester Sophie Rawding tested the Silentnight Healthy Growth Astro Eco 600 Pocket Mattress with her 8-year-old daughter over 3 weeks as part of her usual nightly sleep routine, including bedtime reading, full nights’ sleep and regular sheet changes. Sophie is a freelance journalist and mum of 4. With over 9 years’ experience reviewing pushchairs, car seats and other parenting products, there’s not much she doesn’t know about child and baby kit.

How easy is the Silentnight Healthy Growth Astro Eco 600 Mattress to set up?
Although mattresses are usually quite cumbersome to move around, this one was surprisingly manageable to get into place, despite its sturdy 600 pocket spring core.
As I made the bed for the first time, it felt well-built, solid and made to last.
What are the design and materials like?
It felt very soft to the touch, largely thanks to its quilted surface, and the 23.5cm depth gave it a substantial, luxurious feel — perhaps unsurprising, given it has to house 600 pocket springs in its core.
Silentnight say that the mattress has "breathable EcoComfort Fibres™ for cooler sleep" and this claim seemed well founded during testing. The lightweight quilted cover and the EcoComfort fibres are designed to improve airflow around the body and help regulate body temperature.
It is worth noting, however, that while the pristine white outer fabric looks sleek and fresh, I am slightly concerned about it attracting stains and wonder how easy it will be to keep clean over time.
How comfortable and supportive is the Silentnight Healthy Growth Astro Eco 600 Mattress?
In daily use, the mattress struck an impressive balance between comfort and support.
The mattress has a medium-firm feel, which suited by 8-year-old daughter well. There were times when I would lay in the bed with her to read her bedtime stories and the mattress remained balanced and felt comfortable for me as an adult to sit on too… although it did inevitably creak a little when I tried to sneak off the bed after she had fallen asleep.
After 3 weeks of testing, the results have been consistent. My daughter falls asleep quickly and feels comfortable on the mattress. She says she finds the mattress incredibly cosy to snuggle up on.
As parents, we are often told about the importance of sleep and how much children grow while they sleep, so it was reassuring to see her sleeping comfortably and waking well-rested, and the medium-firm support felt appropriate for a growing child. The brand also states that the mattress is designed to support healthy spinal development, which is reassuring.

How breathable is the Silentnight Healthy Growth Astro Eco 600 Mattress?
One of the biggest positives for us was the mattress’s temperature regulation, especially as my daughter is a naturally hot sleeper and has allergies and asthma.
The breathable design appeared to make a noticeable difference to her comfort – she has not woken up sweaty or clammy at all since we have been using this mattress. She wakes up feeling fresh rather than overheated, which makes mornings feel easier.
It’s worth noting that adding a mattress topper may affect breathability, so we chose to put the fitted sheet directly onto the mattress.
How practical is the mattress day to day?
Day to day, the mattress is practical, although its quality construction does make it fairly weighty.
It fits perfectly within my daughter’s single bed frame with no awkward gaps.
Changing the fitted sheet is easy enough, but it’s worth mentioning that you may need to purchase deep-fitted sheets for this mattress, as the construction means it is 23.5cm deep.
You only need to rotate the mattress 180 degrees every so often. As it’s one-sided, there’s no need to flip it, which makes maintenance much more manageable for one person.

How durable is the Silentnight Healthy Growth Astro Eco 600 Mattress?
The mattress felt durable from the start. Thanks to the 600 pocket springs, there is a noticeable resistance to sagging, even along the edges when you sit on the side of the bed to read a story.
It handled daily life well, whether my daughter was sleeping, sitting up to read or lounging on the bed with toys, the support remains firm and balanced.
This level of stability gives me confidence that the mattress is built to last as my daughter grows through the rest of primary school and into her teenage years.
How easy is the mattress to clean?
While the mattress has a very premium design, the very white fabric does come with some practical worries. With a child using it every night, the white surface is likely to attract dirt, spills and the odd accident over time.
We gave the mattress surface a quick rub with a baby wipe to see how well it responded to cleaning, and it dried quite quickly.

How reassuring does the mattress feel?
It felt reassuring to know my child was sleeping on a mattress that appeared well thought-out and supportive.
The medium-firm feel offered a good balance of comfort and structure, while the hypoallergenic, foam-free and chemical-free design felt particularly relevant for my daughter, who has allergies and asthma.
How does it compare to other children’s mattresses?
Having previously used a standard single mattress that came with my daughter’s Argos bed frame, the difference with this mattress is night and day!
It feels far more specialised for children’s sleep than the standard mattresses we have used previously, with a sturdier and more supportive feel.
How sustainable is the mattress?
The mattress has strong sustainability credentials, with Eco Comfort fibres made from recycled plastic bottles which helps make use of plastic waste that might otherwise end up in landfill or the ocean.
Its overall longevity also adds to its sustainability credentials.
Is the Silentnight Healthy Growth Astro Eco 600 Mattress worth the money?
In my opinion, this mattress is absolutely worth the investment.
Compared with a basic foam or entry-level spring mattress, the difference in quality felt significant.
The superior support and comfort offered by the 600 pocket springs justify the higher price tag, especially when you consider the longevity for growing children.
Knowing that the mattress offered a cooler, more supportive and reassuring sleep surface for my child made it feel like good value for money, especially as I don’t expect to replace it any time soon!

MadeForMums verdict:
Overall, the Silentnight Healthy Growth Astro Eco 600 Pocket Mattress felt like a strong investment for parents looking for a supportive, breathable children’s mattress with reassuring hypoallergenic credentials.
Since switching to this mattress my daughter’s sleep quality has notably improved. She settles quickly, stays cool and wakes up feeling refreshed. While the white fabric may need extra care, the mattress’s overall quality outweighed that concern for us.
I would highly recommend this mattress, particularly for families with children who are warm sleepers or those who suffer from allergies, as the breathable and hypoallergenic design worked very well for us.
This mattress is a great choice for parents looking for a durable, eco-conscious sleep solution that will support their child from their first night in a single bed right up to their teenage years.
