Pros

Cons

The Roomix Transition Toddler Bed is a Montessori-inspired bed designed to support the move from cot to first bed from around 18 months. Sitting low to the floor, it allows toddlers to climb in and out independently, while the enclosed sides and rounded edges are designed to offer reassurance during the transition.

Available in larger sizes, including the small double tested here, it offers plenty of growing room and space for a parent to lie beside their child when needed.

The Roomix Transition Toddler Bed RRPs from £369.99 with plenty of customisable options and is available from Roomix.

About our parent tester Hattie tested the Roomix Transition Toddler Bed with her toddler during the move from cot to first bed, using it for everyday naps, overnight sleep and moments when her daughter needed extra comfort during the night.

How easy is the Roomix Transition Toddler Bed to assemble?

Overall, the bed itself was relatively easy to put together. The base took hardly any time at all — probably less than 20 minutes — and simply required a handful of screws on one side of the frame before pulling the frame together using a clever pre-installed locking mechanism, which only needed a turn of the included Allen key.

The part that made the build trickier was the fact that we had opted for the legs and under-bed storage, which required much more effort to put together. While the bed itself probably consisted of fewer than 10 parts, the drawers felt like they would never end. This wasn’t helped by the fact that the instructions were incorrect in places, meaning the drawers did not sit properly once installed.

That being said, although the drawers were more time-consuming, they were relatively straightforward overall. The mistake in the instructions was easy to rectify, and I managed to put the whole bed together by myself in just a couple of hours.

What was your first impression of the Roomix Transition Toddler Bed?

My first impression was, "wow, this is huge." Despite measuring the space in my daughter's room multiple times, I hadn’t quite prepared myself for how much bigger a small double would feel compared with her previous cot bed.

That being said, it somehow feels right. The bed feels like a real signature piece in the room and has made her room feel much more grown up, without making her seem older than she is. The quality is great and it feels really well made.

My only frustration is that the side rail with the opening squeaks, regardless of how much you tighten it, meaning any movement in the bed makes a noise.

How did the transition from cot to floor bed go?

This genuinely surprised me: it went really well — better than we had expected.

In part, I think this was down to how well prepared my daughter was. As each bed is made to order, there was quite a gap between ordering and delivery, which gave us plenty of time to talk to her about what was going to happen and get her excited about her new 'big girl bed'. By the time it was finally set up in her room, she was so excited that she just wanted to be in it.

If someone else had said this to me, I would never have believed it, but our daughter actually asked to go to bed the other day, which NEVER happened before.

The transition came at a time of huge change for her outside of sleep, and she was also going through a period of extreme separation anxiety. Despite this, she did really well and slept through the night by herself most nights. On the occasions when she needed extra comfort, the size and sturdiness of the bed meant that either my husband or I could sleep beside her.

How easy is it for toddlers to get in and out independently?

You can tell this bed has been made with toddlers in mind. It’s at perfect height for my daughter to get in and out of bed all by herself, and the rounded edges around the bed, particularly at the opening, give me extra reassurance when she is using it independently.

It’s actually so easy to use that I often have to shepherd my 18-month-old son off my daughter’s bed — I fear I may be buying one for him shortly.

How safe and stable does the Roomix Transition Toddler Bed feel?

The bed felt reassuringly low, sturdy and toddler-friendly. The height is well thought out, so even with the add-on legs, my daughter can get in and out as she pleases.

The guard rails give us confidence that she is less likely to roll out of bed, and the curved edges both look and feel good. The materials feel good quality, too, and I have no worries about the bed holding my daughter, as well as either myself or my husband, when she needs that extra level of comfort.

How practical is the Roomix Transition Toddler Bed day to day?

We opted for the under-bed drawers, which have added a fantastic amount of storage space for my daughter’s bedding and clothing. The trade-off is that we can’t clean behind the drawers or underneath the bed without removing them completely.

We do have the bed pushed against the wall, and with the sides of the bed reaching the floor, the lack of cleaning access underneath isn’t obvious, although it is still possible.

The guard rails make everyday jobs like making the bed a little trickier, especially with our small double version. However, for the reassurance they give, I found this a worthwhile inconvenience.

How well made does it feel?

The bed feels solid and good quality. Given the size we chose — a small double — I hope it will last my daughter for many years to come.

The great thing about this bed is that it’s modular, so it can be adapted as your toddler’s lifestyle changes. For example, you can add legs to raise it off the ground, or add drawers to maximise storage space. The best part for me is that these decisions don’t need to be made at the point of buying, as the separate sections can be purchased and added later down the line.

The only downside I can see is that the guard rails are a permanent fixture, so I’m unsure whether they may affect the bed’s practicality once my daughter has outgrown the need for them.

How easy is it to clean and maintain?

Maintenance has been very straightforward so far, and the bed hasn’t needed much upkeep. The bed itself is easy to wipe clean, although the wood is quite soft, so it can dent or scratch easily.

What’s in the box?

How sustainable is the Roomix Transition Toddler Bed?

The bed arrived packaged almost entirely in recyclable cardboard, with each item wrapped in paper rather than plastic. Everything was well protected, but this did mean there was a lot of packaging — enough to fill 2 green recycling bins.

For us, I feel like we future-proofed this bed when we ordered it, with the aim of using it for a long time to come. This was not only because of the size we chose — a small double — but also because we added the legs and drawers, meaning we could use it as a floor bed straightaway, then add height and storage as our daughter gets older.

The quality also means it feels like something that could easily be passed on.

Is the Roomix Transition Toddler Bed worth the money?

I think it’s fair to say that the bed is a premium product, both in cost and quality. For me, it is worth the money, especially considering the years of use we expect to get out of it. You get what you pay for, and this bed feels like a good investment.

MadeForMums verdict:

Overall, I love this bed, and our toddler does too. It’s a lovely blend of style and practicality, and it has helped make the transition from cot to bed feel really successful. It suits her now, but also feels like something that will continue to work for many years to come.

We opted for a small double and, if you have the space, I would really recommend considering the same. Being able to get into bed next to your child when needed is a complete game changer. However, the bed comes in a variety of sizes, so there are options to suit different rooms and family set-ups.
