As temperatures soar, you want to be sure that your baby or toddler is as comfortable and cool as possible while you're out and about. Pulling down the hood on your stroller seat will help keep them in shade, but you may want to go one step further by investing in a fan to attach to your pram.

A clip-on or mini fan fastens to the frame of your pushchair, usually on the hood, handlebar or bumper bar, and angles towards your child to circulate air and create a breeze.

Although pram fans all serve a similar purpose, there are a few useful features to look out for. A rechargeable or USB fan saves you from having to stock up on batteries, while a bladeless or hidden-blade design is helpful if you can't easily mount the fan out of reach. Some fans also offer flexible mounting arms, multiple speed settings, LED lights or 360-degree pivoting.

How we chose these pram fans We spoke to parents and looked for practical, easy-to-attach pram fans that are designed to help keep babies and toddlers cool when you're out and about. We considered mounting style, blade design, power source, speed settings, ease of use and safety considerations, including whether fans had narrow gaps, bladeless operation, hidden blades or softer blades. Where supplied, we’ve also included feedback from MadeForMums parent testers to show how these fans performed in real-life family use.

What to keep in mind

Key specs: Power: USB charging | Speed settings: 3

This simple fan is designed to attach to a range of pushchairs using a universal mount that can be tightened to help keep it secure. It’s small and compact, around the size of a phone, and the bladeless design is useful if your child has a tendency to grab at anything on the pram.

The fan can be adjusted to help you find the right angle, and the 3 speed settings mean you can tailor the breeze to your child's preference.

Versatile Fan pram fans

Why we chose it: The flexible ‘Octopus tripod’ mount makes this a versatile option for attaching to different parts of a pushchair.

The adjustable tripod means this'll fit on virtually anything, and can be quickly angled or adjusted. During the heatwave it has been a godsend.

Key specs: Power: USB charging | Speed settings: 3

The ‘Octopus tripod’ mount on the Winique Stroller Fan means you can securely attach the fan to a wide variety of surfaces. Just twist the multiple legs around the pushchair frame, hood or bumper bar to position it where you need it.

The fan charges by USB and has a quiet motor that it claims helps to keep noise below 57dB. It also has a built-in LED light, which may not be useful when the fan is facing your child, but could make it more versatile for use elsewhere.

The fan has plastic blades contained within a cage with a curved mesh cover to help prevent children touching the blades, although you’ll still want to mount this out of reach if possible.

Munchkin pram fan tester image and product shot

Why we chose it: This rechargeable fan offers a 360-degree pivot, 4 speed settings and flexible mounting arms in a more streamlined design.

A must have! We loved the fact that you can use the bendy straps to put the fan exactly how you want it. The different speed options and the charge lasts very well. It’s not very noisy so he stays asleep which is great. It's also very sturdy and I love the colour.

Key specs: Power: Rechargeable | Speed settings: 4

Another fan with flexible mounting arms, Munchkin’s design is a little more streamlined, with only two arms. This reduces the overall weight, making it a good option for lightweight and compact strollers.

The 360-degree pivot makes it easy to manoeuvre the fan and find the best setup for your child — or point it towards yourself for a bit of cooling too. It’s rechargeable, with a battery life of up to 8 hours, and also has gentle coloured LED lights designed to provide entertainment for your child.

Dreamegg baby pram fan

Why we chose it: This premium fan combines hidden blades, a tightly spaced grill and extra features including an LED display, lights and timer settings.

What we like

What to keep in mind

Key specs: Power: USB | Speed settings: 4, including eco mode

Dreamegg's premium pram fan has a whole host of smart features, from the LED display that helps keep tabs on battery life to the eco mode that extends battery life to over 12 hours, compared with 3 hours at its highest speed.

However, the features most parents will value are the hidden blades at the front and very tightly spaced grill at the back, making this a reassuring buy for curious children. Dreamegg claims it's safe enough to be chewed, and the silicone used in its construction is food grade for this reason.

The fan also comes with built-in lights and 3 timer settings, and is designed to be used beyond the pram, on a cot or car seat too. Although expensive, if you're looking for a multipurpose option that’ll become part of your daily routine, this could be the one.

Dreambaby Stroller Fan

Why we chose it: With soft foam blades and a lower-powered breeze, this is a gentle, lower-cost option for very small babies.

What we like

What to keep in mind

Key specs: Power: 2 AA batteries | Speed settings: 1

Rather than having three flexible mounting arms, this option has a clip with a flexible stem, so you can twist and bend it to find the right angle. The fan has soft foam blades, so if little fingers do manage to reach them, the risk of injury is much lower than with more solid options.

The downside is less overall power, but that’s reflected in the price. Together, those features make this a good choice for very small babies who need something gentler. You can then consider upgrading once your baby becomes a toddler.

As another plus, this fan comes in multiple colours for a bit of added fun.

How to use a pram fan safely

A pram fan is a useful piece of parenting kit, but, like anything that attaches to your child’s pushchair, there are a few safety considerations to be aware of before making a purchase.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions so you can ensure tiny fingers are kept safe. Each fan comes with different specifications, so it’s important to refer to the instructions for the model you buy.

We’ve selected products with narrow gaps, bladeless operation, concealed blades or softer blades, but it’s still important to make sure your child's fingers cannot fit through the cage before securing the fan to their pram.

Different pram fans have different mounting options, so make sure the fan is fastened securely and checked regularly to ensure there’s no risk of it falling off. The right mounting option will depend on your pushchair and where you plan to position the fan.

Avoid positioning a fan near long hair that may become caught and, where possible, tie back your child's hair to prevent it becoming tangled. Pram fans are intended to be used with adult supervision, so never leave your child unattended with the fan.

Fans can help keep your child cool, but babies can still overheat in warm weather. See our advice on how to help your baby sleep safely in hot weather and make sure you're aware of the signs of heat exhaustion in a young child.

Using a pram fan in combination with a sunshade, cover or parasol and an SPF 50+ sunscreen will help keep your child safe and cool in warm weather.
