Pros
- Comfortable enough for all day use and long walks
- Excellent storage and pockets
- Comes with sunshade and rain cover
- Folds down small
- Suitable from 6 months to 3 years
- Lightweight
Cons
- Not easiest to adjust on the go
- May feel roomy for smaller babies
The Out’n’About Nipper Trek is a lightweight structured backpack carrier aimed at families who enjoy walks, travel days and outdoor routes where a pushchair is awkward or impractical. With a fold-flat frame, built-in storage, sunshade and rain cover, it’s designed to give parents a more supportive hands-free option for carrying older babies and toddlers.
At £250, the Out’n’About Nipper Trek is a premium-priced backpack carrier, though we felt the range and quality of its features help justify the outlay for families who aim to use it regularly.

About our parent tester Jake is a writer and editor with 10 years’ experience. He tested the Out’n’About Nipper Trek Backpack Carrier with his partner and their 7-month-old baby on family walks, countryside routes and bumpy paths that would have been difficult with a pram. He had previously relied on a BabyBjorn carrier and pram for walks with his daughter, but wanted something more substantial and supportive for days hiking across parkland and fields. Jake works for another Immediate brand, as does his partner, and also writes for freelance clients, specialising in the sports sector.

How easy is the Out’n’About Nipper Trek Backpack Carrier to set up?
Setting up the carrier was almost as simple as opening the box and unfolding it. We watched Out'n'About's adjustment video before unboxing, which made it easier to get a secure and comfortable fit.
Once set up, we were immediately impressed at how sturdy and comfortable such a lightweight frame felt.
How easy is it to get your child in and out?
Once adjusted, it’s incredibly easy to get your child in and out and fasten them securely. As with most backpack carriers, the challenge lies in lifting the carrier from the floor onto your back once your child is inside.
Having a second pair of hands makes this easier, but it isn't necessary.

How comfortable is the Out’n’About Nipper Trek for babies and toddlers?
We first used this when our baby was six months old and, although she loved being in it, it was a little too roomy. Our daughter is on the smaller size for her age, so when she drifted off to sleep, her head would bounce around a little too much, and therefore we had to transfer her to nap in the pram at this point.
However, within a month she seemed much better supported if she did nap, which made us feel more confident that the carrier would offer more longevity as she grows and our adventures continue.
From the start, she was very happy with the view and seemed comfortable, never complaining and happily watching the world around her, which for a sometimes pram-averse baby was a great source of comfort on long walks.
How comfortable is it for the adult carrying?
Considering the weight you'r carrying, the backpack carriers feels comfortable on longer walks. The shoulder straps are padded and supportive and the hip belt helps to distribute the weight evenly.
My partner, who is also on the small side, found the padded hip belt dug into her hips a little more than I did, so we needed to adjust the torso length on days where we shared the carrying. This was a bit of a faff, but not overly complicated — and it was worth doing for a more tailored fit.
Using this in a heatwave, we also appreciated the breathable mesh material.

Is the Out’n’About Nipper Trek easy to adjust between parents?
There’s a clever Velcro panel at the back which makes it straightforward to change between wearers, although it may need a couple of attempts to find the perfect height.
We struggled with the straps at first, but once we got a feel for them, adjustment became simpler.
My partner and I have quite different torso sizes, and we both found this carrier comfortable once we figured out which adjustments worked best for each of us.
The first couple of times we swapped mid-walk, it took a few tries to find the right torso height adjustments (as this needs to be done with the item on the floor), but soon we were able to successfully eyeball it.

How stable and secure does the Out’n’About Nipper Trek feel?
We never had any concerns about the carrier’s stability. Although it's very light, the backpack feels balanced and secure, even when standing on the ground. The frame is sturdy and we didn’t feel the backpack threw us off balance, even on uneven ground.
How well does the Out’n’About Nipper Trek perform outdoors?
Compared with our previous pram-and-carrier set-up, the backpack has been a game changer.
It’s opened up longer walks and more adventurous terrain that were simply too uncomfortable for our BabyBjorn carrier or too uneven for the pram.
Clever features such as the ventilation panel helped us from getting overly sweaty on hot days, and the storage is ample enough for any solo parent adventures with baby in tow.

How useful is the storage?
The storage is one of the Nipper Trek’s biggest strengths. We were really impressed by how much we could fit in the zipped pockets, and the bottle holder has been great for staying hydrated on the go. We were able to pack all the baby essentials, plus our lunches and books in the main pocket, with plenty of room for more.
For serious hikers, the backpack is also hydration bladder compatible, although this isn’t a feature we used.

How good are the sunshade and rain cover?
The UPF sunshade gave useful coverage without blocking our baby's view.
It’s easy to attach and remove, though it’s worth noting for particularly sunny days that the baby’s legs aren’t covered by the shade, although the open design did mean she felt less enclosed. As we mainly tested the carrier during a particularly dry spring/summer, we didn’t need the rain cover, although a dry run at home indicated it would be more than up to the job.
How portable and easy to store is the Out'n'About Nipper Trek?
The carrier folds flat which is brilliant in terms of storage. Without this feature, the carrier would have been a bulky item which we’d have struggled to house.
At just 2.5kg, it’s incredibly easy to lift into a car boot, onto a train, or up stairs. We used it on multiple long days out and have had no complaints on its size, shape or weight.
We considered taking this on a European holiday, but with only one walk in mind weren’t sure it was worth the luggage space. For future adventure holidays with several walks planned, we’d be more likely to take it with us.
What is the design and build quality like?
The frame itself feels very well-made, with all materials fit for purpose. The only issue we had was with the chest strap, which pinged off when we pulled it tight after several uses.
There are some nice additional touches to the carrier, like a rope handle for older siblings and a rear-view mirror for checking on your child. Being flexible, this mirror is impossible to break but can be a little hard to get a proper view without stopping, as it warps. The removable drool pad is another design feature that’s worth its weight in gold.

Is the Out’n’About Nipper Trek worth the money?
While the Nipper Trek is undoubtedly a premium item, we were really impressed with it during testing.
For a backpack carrier like this, comfort and practicality are key, and the Nipper Trek performs well on both counts. The storage more than holds its own and comfort for both wearer and baby has clearly not been compromised on.
If you’re keen to take your baby out for long walks and family adventures, I’d highly recommend this backpack for both occasional walkers and frequent explorers.

Where can I buy the Out’n’About Nipper Trek?

MadeForMums verdict:
Whilst undoubtedly a premium item, we have been really impressed with the Out’n’About Nipper Trek. The backpack has been a game changer, opening up longer walks and more adventurous outings, thanks to comfort and practicality that we could trust.
The straps aren’t the easiest to adjust on the go and may be too roomy for smaller babies at first, but with ample storage, useful rain and sun attachments and a brilliant fold-flat design, we’d highly recommend it for any family wanting to explore.
