When your child is starting to outgrow their baby car seat, it may be time to start looking for a toddler car seat. This usually happens somewhere around 12 to 15 months, but the right time to move depends on your child’s height and weight, as well as the limits of your current car seat.

Jump to the best toddler car seats to buy in the UK

The toddler car seat market can feel overwhelming, especially with so many different options available, from extended rear-facing seats and 360° spin models to forward-facing seats with newer safety technology. The best choice for your family will depend on your child, your car, your budget and how you’ll use the seat day to day.

To help you decide, we’ve researched and reviewed a range of toddler car seats from trusted brands, with options to suit different cars, family needs and budgets. All of the seats in this list have been tested by MadeForMums reviewers and parent testers in real family life, looking at safety credentials, ease of fitting, comfort, value and everyday usability.

How we chose the best toddler car seats

Every car seat in this list has been chosen using MadeForMums’ expert reviews, parent tester feedback and editorial research. Where available, we have included our own review ratings, parent tester comments and independent safety test information, including ADAC scores. We also considered R129/i-Size approval, rear-facing limits, ease of installation, comfort, recline, weight, size, value for money and how easy each seat is to use day to day. Our list is not an ordered ranking. Instead, each car seat has been selected because it suits a different family need, car set-up or budget. The best toddler car seat for you will be one that fits your child, fits your car and can be installed correctly every time.

Axkid Minikid 4 Max tester picture and product shot

Why we chose it: A premium extended rear-facing car seat with a long usage window, Swedish Plus Test approval and a reassuringly robust feel.

I would recommend the Axkid Minikid 4 Max to families who want to keep their child rear-facing for longer, particularly those with taller or heavier toddlers who may outgrow standard Group 1-style seats sooner than expected. It may feel best value if bought soon after your baby outgrows their infant carrier, giving several years of use through the toddler and early school years.

If extended rear-facing is your priority, the Axkid Minikid 4 Max is a strong choice. It’s designed to keep children rear-facing up to 36kg or 125cm, which is around 6 to 7 years old, and has passed the Swedish Plus Test.

MFM parent reviewer Yvette used it with her 16 month old and 3 year old and was impressed by the sturdy build, breathable fabric and support for taller children. Installation takes a little more thought than a simple ISOFIX seat, as it uses the vehicle seatbelt and lower tethers, but the QR-code videos and on-seat diagrams help.

It’s a premium buy and the buckle can be a little fiddly, but for families who want a long-lasting, safety-focused rear-facing seat, it feels like a reassuring investment.

Why we chose it: A premium forward-facing i-Size seat with an impact shield and integrated airbag, designed to offer extra protection in a frontal collision.

If the budget allows, and you are comfortable with the use of an airbag, overall, I would recommend the Anoris T2 to families who are making frequent shorter journeys with toddlers and preschoolers. The spacious seat and one-click impact shield makes it quick and easy to switch between children of different ages, which is a real advantage for busy families.

The Cybex Anoris T2 is a very different kind of toddler car seat. Instead of a traditional harness, it uses an impact shield with an integrated airbag, designed to reduce forces on a child’s head and neck in a frontal collision.

MFM parent tester Harriet used it with her 20 month old and 4 year old and found it quick to use day to day. Once installed, the light-up safety indicator confirms when the ISOFIX points and load-leg are correctly fitted, and securing a child is simple: one strap, one click and done.

It won’t suit every family. It’s forward-facing only, doesn’t rotate and the impact shield can feel bulky, particularly for smaller toddlers or longer journeys. But if you’re looking for an innovative forward-facing seat with extra safety tech and easy switching between children, it’s a standout option.

thule elm

Why we chose it: An ADAC test winner with a lightweight seat, very quick installation and clear safety indicators for extra reassurance.

A unique feature that I haven’t seen on any other car seat is that you can pop the car seat onto the base at any angle of rotation and it will fit on. The installation of this car seat is so quick and easy, it really is stress-free.

The Thule Elm and Thule Alfi base make a strong choice if you want a toddler car seat that feels quick, clear and reassuring to install. The base took our tester Rob less than 3 minutes to fit, with a digital display showing when everything was locked correctly in place.

Rob used the seat with his 8 month old and 3 year old and found it comfortable for both children, including on longer journeys and car naps. He also liked that the seat can be clicked onto the base from any rotation angle — a small detail that makes everyday use feel much easier.

The buckle can be a little fiddly, but the trade-off is that it feels secure. For families who regularly move seats between cars, the lightweight design and clear safety indicators make this a particularly parent-friendly option.

Why we chose it: A competitively priced 360° rotating car seat with smooth swivel action, clear installation indicators and a compact fit for smaller cars.

For parents looking for a premium, back-saving 360° spin without the £300+ price tag, the Turn2Me DLX is a brilliant middle-ground that still feels sturdy, reassuring and well made.

If you’re looking for a rotating seat that feels smooth and reassuring without the premium price tag, the Graco Turn2Me DLX is a strong contender. It offers 360° rotation, ISOFIX installation, a support leg and clear red-to-green visual indicators to help confirm it’s fitted correctly.

MFM parent reviewer Lou used it with her baby and tall 2.5-year-old across both a compact Peugeot 207 and larger MG5 EV. She was especially impressed by how easily it fitted in the smaller car, and said the rotation was noticeably smoother than other 360° seats she had used.

The cushioning is firmer than some rivals and the spin can occasionally overshoot the locking point, but for everyday family use it feels robust, practical and good value.

Joie i-spin 360 being tested with a toddler

Why we chose it: A good-value rotating car seat that feels sturdy and secure, with smooth 360° spin and 6 recline settings.

I like the fact that the seat can turn around so I can easily put my baby into it and I also like the recline option, which can help her to feel more comfortable and send her off to sleep quicker.

The Joie i-Spin 360 has been a parent favourite for years, and it’s easy to see why. It offers the everyday convenience of a rotating seat, allowing you to turn your child towards the car door before spinning them safely into position.

MFM parent reviewer Ima tested it with her 13 month old and liked how secure and comfortable it felt once installed. She found the 360° spin especially useful for getting her daughter in and out, while the 6 recline settings helped make journeys more comfortable.

It’s not the easiest seat to install, mainly because the seat and base are attached and can feel cumbersome to manoeuvre. But once it’s fitted, it feels sturdy, safe and good value for a rotating toddler seat.

Why we chose it: A very affordable R129 car seat that’s lightweight, easy to install and designed to grow with your child from toddler age to around 12 years.

If you need a lightweight, budget-friendly car seat for a second car, grandparents’ car or occasional use, the Joie Elevate R129 is a strong option. It’s suitable from around 15 months to 12 years and installs using the car’s own seatbelt, so it’s easy to move between vehicles.

MFM parent reviewer Helen used it with her nearly 4 year old and found it simple to install, comfortable and reassuringly sturdy for the price. The Grow Together feature is especially useful, allowing the headrest and harness to adjust at the same time as your child grows.

It doesn’t have premium features such as ISOFIX, rotation, rear-facing or recline, so it may not be the best choice for younger toddlers or long journeys. But as an affordable, practical R129 seat that can last for years, it offers excellent value.

If getting your child in and out of the car is a daily struggle, the Maxi-Cosi Mica 360 Pro has a standout feature: the seat not only rotates, but slides out towards you too. This SlideTech design helps reduce bending and twisting, making it especially useful for parents with back concerns or anyone regularly loading a wriggly toddler into the car.

MFM parent reviewer Hannah used it with her 4 month old and 3 year old and found it very easy to install, with green indicators confirming when the ISOFIX connectors were fitted correctly. She was also impressed by the one-handed spin, easy-in harness and comfort for both children.

It’s heavy and sits at the premium end of the market, so it’s not one to move regularly between cars. But if you want a comfortable, back-friendly rotating seat with clever everyday convenience features, it’s a strong Maxi-Cosi option.

Why we chose it: A long-lasting all-stage rotating car seat that can be used from birth to around 12 years, with smooth 360° rotation and useful comfort extras included.

The Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 feels like a worthwhile investment. It’s well-built, uses quality materials that feel comfortable and supportive, and comes with practical extras such as the summer liner for warmer weather and the leakproof liner for potty training. If you want one car seat to last as long as possible, the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 is designed to take your child from birth to around 12 years. It offers 360° rotation, extended rear-facing travel and a useful comfort kit, including a sunshade, summer liner and seatbelt pad.

MFM parent reviewer Sarah used it with her 19 month old and 6 year old and found it quick to install, with clear red and green indicators showing when it was fitted correctly. She particularly liked the smooth rotation, which made it easier to get her toddler into the car with less strain on her back.

As with many all-stage seats, it’s heavy and bulky, and it won’t replace the portability of an infant carrier for younger babies. But if you’re shopping for a long-lasting seat rather than a travel-system-compatible baby seat, it offers strong value and plenty of useful features.

When should my child move from an infant carrier to a toddler car seat?

Move your child when they have reached the height or weight limit of their baby car seat, rather than simply when they reach a certain age. Many babies use an infant carrier until around 12 to 15 months, but this varies depending on the child and the seat.

Always check the label and instruction manual for your current car seat. Your child should still fit within the seat’s approved height and weight limits, and their head should not be above the top of the seat shell.

If your child still fits safely in their baby car seat, there is usually no need to move them early. Many infant carriers are designed to be used until around 15 months, and some may last longer depending on your child’s height and weight.

Can my toddler face forwards?

For R129 height-based car seats, children must travel rear-facing until they are over 15 months old. Many toddler car seats now allow children to rear-face for much longer, often until around age 4, 6 or even 7, depending on the seat’s height and weight limits.

Rear-facing for longer is often recommended because it can offer better protection for a young child’s head, neck and spine in a collision. However, the best car seat is always one that fits your child, fits your car and can be installed correctly every time.

Some families may choose a forward-facing toddler seat once their child is old enough and meets the seat’s height and weight requirements. If you do choose a forward-facing seat, make sure it is suitable for your child’s current size and that you follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions carefully.

What is R129?

R129 is the newer child car seat safety regulation. It uses height-based sizing rather than the older weight-based groups, and R129 seats are tested for side-impact protection.

You may also see the term i-Size. This is linked to R129 and is often used by manufacturers and retailers to describe height-based car seats that meet the newer standard.

R129 seats usually make it easier to choose the right size because you can match the car seat to your child’s height. However, you should still check the seat’s full approval range, including any maximum weight limits.

Should I still buy an R44 car seat?

For a refreshed MadeForMums best list, we have focused mainly on newer and currently relevant car seats, especially R129-approved models where possible.

Some parents may still legally use an existing R44 seat if it is suitable, undamaged and correctly fitted. However, if you are buying a new toddler car seat, it is worth looking for a current R129-approved model.

If you already own an older seat, check that it has never been in an accident, is suitable for your child’s current height and weight, fits your car correctly and has not expired according to the manufacturer’s guidance.

What should I look for in a toddler car seat?

Do I need a rotating toddler car seat?

A rotating or 360° car seat can make it much easier to get your child in and out of the car, especially if you have a smaller car, a high vehicle or back problems. Being able to turn the seat towards the car door can also make it easier to tighten the harness properly.

However, rotating seats are often heavier and more expensive than non-rotating models. They may also take up more space in the car. If you only want to compare spin seats, take a look at our dedicated guide to the best rotating car seats.

Are extended rear-facing car seats worth it?

Extended rear-facing car seats allow children to travel rear-facing for longer than the legal minimum. Some rear-facing toddler seats last until around age 4, while others can be used rear-facing until around age 6 or 7.

Many parents choose extended rear-facing because it can offer extra protection for a young child’s head, neck and spine in a crash. These seats can be more expensive, and some may need more careful installation, but they can be a strong option if you want to keep your child rear-facing for as long as possible.

How much does a toddler car seat cost?

Toddler car seats vary widely in price. Budget options can cost around £100 to £200, while premium rotating, modular or extended rear-facing seats can cost £300 to £600 or more.

A more expensive seat is not automatically the best choice for every family. The most important thing is that the seat is suitable for your child, compatible with your car and easy for you to fit and use correctly every time.

If money is tight, a budget car seat from a reputable brand can still be a good option, provided it meets the required safety standards and fits your car properly. We do not recommend buying a second-hand car seat from someone you do not know, as you cannot be sure whether it has been involved in an accident or damaged.

How do I fit a toddler car seat?

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for fitting your car seat. Many brands have online car compatibility checkers and installation videos, which can be useful before and after you buy.

Some toddler car seats use ISOFIX connectors, while others are fitted using the car’s seatbelt. Some also use a support leg or top tether for extra stability. Before buying, check whether your car has ISOFIX points and whether it is compatible with the seat you are considering.

If you can, it’s worth having your car seat fitted or checked by a trained car seat installation adviser. Once the seat is installed, make sure the harness is adjusted correctly for your child every time they travel.
