How we chose the best children’s luggage
When selecting these 12 children’s luggage options, we considered size, capacity, weight, materials, durability, manoeuvrability, style, ride-on functionality, additional features and overall value for money. Many of the products have also been tested by MadeForMums parent testers and their children. Our best lists draw on independent reviews, MadeForMums Awards testing, feedback from our home-testing panel and our Top Testers Club. Thousands of products are put through their paces by parents across the country on behalf of MadeForMums, helping us provide honest, practical recommendations. This list is not an ordered ranking from 1 to 12. Apart from our best overall choice, each product has been selected because we believe it suits a particular family, journey or requirement.

Why we chose it: The Trunki combines a durable, child-friendly design with useful storage and a comfortable ride-on function, making it a practical choice for family journeys.
It's fun, appealing and I love that there are lots of different designs so you can find a design that suits your child, and you can even design your own colour scheme which is amazing! The locking mechanism is easy to use and secure, and the carry handles are a great addition for when parents and older children need to carry the Trunki. My 5 year old says its comfortable to sit on and I can see it being a great way of her getting round the airport in the summer!
Parent tester Sinead, who tested the Trunki with her 5-year-old daughter Aine (pictured)
What we like
- Comfortable ride-on design
- Lightweight and durable
- Generous 18-litre capacity
- Wide choice of child-friendly designs
- Carry handle and tow strap
What to keep in mind
- The strap can feel a little flimsy
- It is more expensive than some standard pull-along cases
Key specifications: Capacity: 18 litres | Dimensions: L20.5cm x W46cm x H31cm | Weight: 1.7kg | Wheels: Yes | Ride-on: Yes
Trunki is a firm favourite with our testers, reviewers and parents. Children can sit on the saddle and be pulled through the airport, while grips help them stay stable and the carry handle makes it easier for an adult to pick up when needed. There is also a teddy bear seatbelt inside.
The case can be used as cabin luggage on most airlines, although families should always check their airline’s current size restrictions before travelling.
There is a broad selection of designs, including Tiger, Dinosaur, Fire Engine, Unicorn and even a Peppa Pig version.

Why we chose it: This compact, sturdy pull-along case gives younger children a manageable piece of luggage for weekends away and shorter breaks.
It's a really sturdy case, with a tough shell, that can really handle being pulled along by a toddler. It's not huge, but I can fit all his essentials for a weekend trip inside and the cute design makes packing and pulling it more fun for him. It trundles along easily and the handle height is just high enough for me to pull, as well as working very well for him – he really enjoys pulling it around.
Parent tester Christy, who tested the Boppi Tiny Trekker with her 3-year-old son (pictured)
What we like
- Durable outer shell
- Lightweight design
- Two adjustable handle heights
- Double-zipped inner compartment
- Available in a wide range of designs
What to keep in mind
- The 17-litre capacity is relatively limited
- There is no ride-on function
Key specifications: Capacity: 17 litres | Dimensions: L22cm x W30cm x H42cm, with handle height of 60cm to 72cm | Weight: 1.5kg | Wheels: Yes | Ride-on: No
These pull-along cases from family-run brand Boppi come in a range of designs, including a customisable option that comes with a a letter sticker set. A freestanding stopper helps keep the case upright when it is stationary.
Its smaller capacity makes it best suited to a weekend trip or UK break. However, the robust casing should help protect your child’s belongings while they practise pulling their own luggage.

Why we chose it: Its fold-out scooter, light-up wheels and manageable ride make this a fun choice for keeping younger children moving through stations and airports.
The light-up wheels got squeals of delight! The instructions are clear and switching between the suitcase and scooter mode is pretty simple, although you do need 2 hands to do it.
Parent tester Emma, who tested this with her daughter Mariella, 4 (pictured)
What we like
- Built-in fold-out scooter
- Battery-free light-up wheels
- Adjustable handlebar
- Built-in kickstand
- Weatherproof design
What to keep in mind
- Its 13-litre capacity is limited
- It is relatively expensive
- Only one colour option is supplied
- Changing modes requires 2 hands
Key specifications: Capacity: 13 litres | Dimensions unfolded: L38cm x W30cm x H49cm to 70cm | Dimensions folded: L25cm x W30cm x H51cm | Weight: 3.3kg | Wheels: Yes | Ride-on: Yes
The Mini Micro Scooter Suitcase has the neat styling and practical design associated with Micro Scooters. It folds relatively easily, and parent tester Emma found it straightforward to ride even when belongings were packed inside.
She felt the limited handlebar height settings made it more suitable for children towards the younger end of the recommended 2-to-6-year age range. Its smaller capacity also means it is likely to work best for days out or short UK breaks where bringing a scooter would be useful.

Why we chose it: This ride-on case doubles as an in-flight seat extender, giving children somewhere to rest their legs or sleep on compatible flights.
What we like
- Works as a ride-on and carry-on case
- Converts into an in-flight bed or footrest
- Top handle and foot ledge for ride-on comfort
- Available in several colours
What to keep in mind
- The mattress reduces the available packing space
- It is one of the more expensive options
- The strap can feel flimsy
- Airline acceptance varies and must be checked before travel
Key specifications: Capacity: 20 litres | Dimensions: L20cm x W46cm x H36cm | Weight: 3kg including mattress | Wheels: Yes | Ride-on: Yes
The JetKids BedBox is a ride-on, carry-on and sleep-on suitcase in one. Once on the plane, it converts into a seat extender that can be used as a bed or footrest, depending on the child’s age and height.
It fits many standard economy seats and has been approved by some airlines, including Virgin Atlantic. However, families should check directly with their airline before travelling.
Parent tester Anita found the packing space relatively limited once the mattress padding was inside. She was able to pack nappies, clothing changes and activities for 2 children, but did not consider it a replacement for a full carry-on bag.

Why we chose it: The removable padded seat and 3-point harness make this a more supportive ride-on option for younger travellers.
The seat was comfortable for my baby to sit on in long queues in the airport and for getting on/off the plane. It was actually so comfortable that my 3 year old fell asleep sitting on it. It also doubled up as a seat when eating in busy restaurants in the airport.
Parent tester Natalie, who tested the Skyrider Luxury with her 3-year-old son and 21-month-old daughter Emilia (pictured)
What we like
- Removable plush-lined seat
- 3-point safety harness
- Foot brake
- Built-in security lock
- Useful for queues and airport transfers
What to keep in mind
- The ride-on weight limit is 15kg
- It is relatively expensive
- Only one design option is supplied
- It can be harder to move across dips or changes in surface
Key specifications: Capacity: Not specified | Dimensions: L57cm x W26cm x H40cm | Weight: 3kg, or 3.5kg with seat | Wheels: Yes | Ride-on: Yes
This 4-wheel carry-on case converts into a travel seat for children weighing up to 15kg. Its lower weight limit means it may not last as long as some alternatives, but the padded seat and harness make it better suited to younger children.
Parent tester Natalie found it easy to manoeuvre on most surfaces and particularly useful after leaving the plane. She fitted 2 children’s backpacks inside, although she noted that the zip pull occasionally caught near the wheel.

What to keep in mind

Key specifications: Capacity: 22 litres | Dimensions: L27cm x W44cm x H60cm | Adjustable handle: 85cm to 109cm | Weight: 4kg | Wheels: Yes | Ride-on: Yes
Little legs can tire quickly in an airport, particularly when a pushchair has already been checked into the hold. The Micro Eazy can be used as a ride-on from 18 months and has a 20kg weight limit, one of the highest among the ride-on products listed here.
The ride-on section folds down to create a case that may be accepted as cabin luggage, depending on the airline. The suitcase can also be removed entirely, leaving a slimline foldable trike.

What to look for when choosing children’s luggage
Size and capacity
Consider what you need the bag to hold. Smaller children’s cases may be best for toys, snacks and entertainment during the journey, while larger options may hold most or all of a child’s holiday clothing.
Look for useful compartments, such as an accessible pocket for small items or a bottle holder. When buying hand luggage, always check the case dimensions against the allowance for the airline and ticket type you are using.
Weight
Check the empty weight as well as the likely packed weight. Your child may be able to manage a light case in the shop but struggle once it contains clothing, toys and toiletries.
For ride-on luggage, remember that the adult will be pulling both the case and the child. The empty case weight will also count towards any airline cabin-luggage allowance.
Wheels and handles
Wheeled luggage is often easier for a child to manage than a backpack over a long journey. Four-wheel cases can be pushed or pulled, while 2-wheel designs may be more stable on uneven ground.
Check whether the handle is adjustable. A fixed child-height handle may be uncomfortable for an adult to use if the child becomes tired.
Ride-on functionality
Ride-on luggage can help with tired legs during long airport walks and queues. Options range from sit-on cases such as the Trunki to scooter cases, trikes and products with supportive seats.
Check the manufacturer’s age and weight limits, particularly if you hope to use the case for several years. Also consider whether the child has somewhere secure to hold on and whether a harness, footrest or brake is provided.
Materials and durability
Look at how well the case is likely to cope with bumps, spills and repeated use. Hard-shell cases can protect delicate belongings, while soft cases may be lighter or easier to squeeze into a restricted space.
Consider how easy the materials are to wipe clean and whether any fabric parts can be removed or washed. Handles, zips, straps and wheel fittings should also feel sturdy.
Style
A design your child enjoys may encourage them to help with packing and look after their own case. There are options featuring animals, dinosaurs, unicorns, Disney characters and more understated designs for older children.
