If you've hit your 30s and suddenly collagen seems to be everywhere, from your Instagram feed to the supplements aisle, you're not imagining it. Powders, shots and sachets promising an easy addition to your beauty and wellness routine have become seriously popular.

Collagen is a protein naturally found throughout the body, including in our skin, bones, muscles and connective tissue, and our bodies gradually produce less of it with age. That doesn't mean turning 30 requires an emergency collagen order, but it may explain why supplements become more interesting at this stage of life.

And when you're balancing work, kids and approximately 47 other things before breakfast, any supplement also needs to be realistic to use. We've tested 16 marine, vegan, bovine and blended collagen products, looking at flavour, ingredients and how easily they fit into everyday life, whether you want something to stir into your morning coffee or a sachet you can throw into your bag.

How we tested the best collagen supplements

We tested 16 marine, vegan, bovine and blended collagen products, looking at flavour, ingredient quality and how easy each supplement was to fit into everyday life. We considered taste and texture, how easily powders mixed into drinks or smoothies and how convenient ready-to-drink shots and individual sachets were to use. We also looked at the wider ingredient lists and considered whether each format felt realistic to use regularly.

Best collagen supplement overall

Absolute Collagen Marine Liquid Collagen Supplement, £33.99

Absolute Collagen

Best for: Overall

Star rating: 5/5

Why we chose it: A high-strength marine collagen that combines a mild, easy-to-drink flavour with convenient sachets and 8,000mg of collagen per serving.

What we like

What to keep in mind

Despite being a high-strength marine collagen drink, our testers found Absolute Collagen's flavoured sachets mild and easy to drink rather than fishy. We tried the mango and pineapple flavour, which mixed well into both water and smoothies.

Each sachet delivers 8,000mg of hydrolysed marine collagen peptides plus 60mg of vitamin C, a combination designed to support normal collagen formation.

Our testers found that taking it daily felt like a simple addition to their routine. After several weeks, they reported noticing a difference to skin hydration and condition, along with shinier nails.

Best collagen supplements for different needs

Elle Sera Liposomal Tripeptide Collagen, £69.95

Elle Sera Collagen

Best for: Absorption

Star rating: 5/5

Why we chose it: Its liposomal tripeptide formula and convenient liquid ampoules make this a distinctive option for anyone prioritising an easy-to-take collagen format.

What we like

What to keep in mind

Elle Sera's Liposomal Tripeptide Collagen comes in sealed liquid ampoules that are easy to sip each day. One of our testers described the taste as sweet and pleasant, similar to a mild berry or candy flavour, compared with some other collagen supplements.

The formula uses liposomal delivery with tripeptide collagen, meaning the collagen is broken into small pieces and enclosed in liposomes. It also contains vitamins A, C and E, biotin, zinc and lycopene.

Our testers enjoyed the smooth texture and convenient ampoules and, after a few weeks of use, felt their skin looked noticeably more radiant.

Available from: Elle Sera (£69.95)

Hunter & Gather Rise & Glow Collagen Daily Beauty Tonic, from £32

Hunter and Gather Collagen

Best for: Taste

Star rating: 5/5

Why we chose it: This was our favourite marine collagen for flavour, with a fruity, sweet-yet-tangy taste that worked well simply mixed with water.

What we like

What to keep in mind

Despite having a marine collagen base, this supplement from Hunter & Gather didn't have a hint of fishiness and was our favourite on test for flavour. It's tasty enough to mix with water rather than needing to be disguised in fruit juice or a smoothie.

The overall taste is sweet yet tangy, with a slight floral undertone from the hibiscus. Alongside 5,000mg of collagen per serving, it contains vitamin C from a fruit-powder blend including açai, blueberry, blackcurrant and raspberry.

It's a particularly appealing option if you want to add collagen to your routine but are worried about the taste.

Available from: Healf (£32)

JS Health Vitality X + Collagen, £39.99

Vitality X Collagen

Best for: Smoothies

Star rating: 5/5

Why we chose it: Its light, fruity flavour worked particularly well blended into a morning fruit smoothie, without any noticeable marine taste.

What we like

What to keep in mind

This collagen supplement makes a light, fruity drink. Although it's made using wild deep-sea cod skin alongside other ingredients, we couldn't detect any marine flavour when we tested it.

Other ingredients include turmeric and blueberry powder, which contribute to the fruitiness. We also picked up tropical-fruit flavours with a pleasant acidity that balanced the sweetness.

We thought it tasted best added to a morning fruit smoothie, making it an easy option if smoothies are already part of your routine.

Available from: JS Health Vitamins (£39.99)

Thorne Collagen Fit, £45.49

Thorne Collagen

Best for: Exercise and recovery

Star rating: 4.5/5

Why we chose it: With 15g of collagen per serving and a neutral taste, this performance-focused formula is particularly easy to add to a post-workout smoothie or everyday drink.

What we like

What to keep in mind

Thorne Collagen Fit leans more towards performance than beauty. Each serving delivers 15g of collagen plus added ingredients including nicotinamide riboside and betaine, so it's geared more towards recovery and training support.

The powder is completely neutral, making it easy to add to coffee or smoothies without affecting the taste. It mixes well overall, although we found a shaker or frother helped to avoid clumps.

Its NSF Certified for Sport status also sets it apart from most of the collagen powders we tested. It's a pricier choice, but one worth considering if your priority is a performance-focused formula.

Available from: Healf (£45.49)

Pure Gold Collagen 10 Day Programme, £39

Gold Collagen

Best for: Collagen shots

Star rating: 4/5

Why we chose it: These 50ml ready-to-drink shots require no preparation and combine around 5g of marine collagen with a wider mixture of vitamins, minerals and hyaluronic acid.

What we like

What to keep in mind

If you want as little preparation as possible, this is about as easy as it gets. Each 50ml Gold Collagen shot delivers around 5g of marine collagen alongside a mixture of vitamins, minerals and hyaluronic acid.

The peach flavour is smooth and easy to drink, slightly sweet with a light aftertaste. There's no preparation, simply open a bottle and drink it.

The trade-off is price and packaging. It works out expensive per serving, and glass bottles are less practical if you want to carry several while travelling. But it's a handy option when convenience is a priority.

Available from: Holland & Barrett (£39)

New Nordic Collagen Shot Sachets, £30.99

New Nordic Collagen

Best for: Grab-and-go convenience

Star rating: 4/5

Why we chose it: Tear-and-go sachets make this one of the simplest options for busy days or travelling when mixing a powder isn't practical.

What we like

What to keep in mind

These were among the easiest products we tested for staying consistent with a daily routine. Each sachet delivers 5g of marine collagen plus vitamin C and biotin, with no mixing required, just tear it open and drink.

The berry flavour is slightly sweet with a smooth texture, so it feels more like a drink than a supplement.

They're particularly useful for travel or busy days when preparing a powder isn't practical. The main compromise is value, as the individual sachets are relatively expensive and contain less collagen than many powdered options.

Available from: Holland & Barrett (£30.99)

Rejuvenated Collagen Shots, £52.50

Rejuvenated Collagen

Best for: Beauty-focused formula

Star rating: 4/5

Why we chose it: This marine collagen powder combines collagen with antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and a probiotic in a formula designed with skin in mind.

What we like

Rejuvenated combines hydrolysed marine collagen, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid with a probiotic, reflecting the brand's focus on the connection between gut health and skin.

Despite the marine collagen base, we didn't notice a fishy taste. The flavour is very subtle, which may suit you if you prefer supplements that aren't strongly flavoured.

Available from: Rejuvenated (£52.50)

Revive Collagen Hydrolysed Marine Collagen Drink, from £27.74

Revive Collagen

Best for: Gel sachets

Star rating: 4/5

Why we chose it: Its gel format offers something different from a traditional powder, with convenient sachets and a pleasant lemony citrus flavour when diluted with water.

What we like

What to keep in mind

Unlike many of the powders on this list, this collagen supplement comes as a gel with a consistency similar to undiluted cordial. We think adding it to water is the best way to take it, as the lemony citrus flavour is pleasant, although it can also be mixed with juice.

Alongside marine collagen, the gels contain retinol and hydrolysed keratin.

A regular box contains 14 sachets. Revive also offers a subscription option supplying two boxes every 28 days with free delivery.

Available from: Holland & Barrett (£27.74)

Sixways Raspberry Flavour Marine Collagen, from £34.39

Sixways Collagen

Best for: Flavoured powder

Star rating: 4/5

Why we chose it: This raspberry-flavoured powder is easy to mix into drinks and manages to disguise the marine collagen taste effectively.

What we like

What to keep in mind

This supplement comes in powder form, making it easy to mix into your drink of choice. The first flavour we noticed was a strong, sour raspberry that reminded us of undiluted fruit cordial, but importantly, we couldn't detect any fishiness.

Sixways says its marine collagen comes from sustainably sourced fish in the Atlantic. The formula also contains vitamins C and A.

There are 28 servings in a pack, so it should last around a month when taken daily, and a monthly subscription is also available.

Available from: Holland & Barrett (£34.39)

OQO Collagen Powder Sachets, £29.99

OQO Collagen

Best for: Single-serve powder

Star rating: 3.5/5

Why we chose it: Individually portioned sachets make this a practical choice for travel or busy routines, while each serving contains 10g of hydrolysed marine collagen.

What we like

What to keep in mind

This is a handy option if convenience is the main attraction. Each sachet delivers 10g of hydrolysed marine collagen plus vitamin C, vitamin E, biotin, hyaluronic acid, glutathione and inulin.

The unflavoured powder is straightforward to mix into coffee, smoothies or water, although it isn't completely invisible and can leave a few lumps if it isn't mixed well.

At £29.99 for 25 servings, it's not wildly expensive, although much of its appeal comes from the practical single-serve format.

Available from: Amazon (£29.99)

Shreddy Superskin, £38

Shreddy Superskin Collagen

Best for: Vegan collagen alternative

Star rating: 5/5

Why we chose it: This plant-based collagen alternative performed particularly well for flavour, with a sweet and refreshing peach iced tea taste our testers found easy to drink.

What we like

Formulated with a plant-based collagen alternative, this powder performed brilliantly in our taste test. The peach iced tea flavour was sweet and refreshing, and we thought it would be easy to drink regularly.

Like many vegan collagen alternatives, it includes additional nutrients rather than conventional animal-derived collagen, including vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.

Available from: Shreddy (£38)

Feel Strawberry Peach Vegan Collagen Powder, £56.43

Feel Strawberry Peach Vegan Collagen Powder

Best for: Taste in a vegan option

Star rating: 4/5

Why we chose it: Its strawberry-peach flavour was one of the best vegan options we tested, with most testers saying they'd happily drink it every day.

What we like

What to keep in mind

This powder has a pleasantly sweet, fruity flavour similar to strawberry sherbet, balanced by a tangy acidity. It was one of the best vegan options we tried, and most of our testers said they'd happily take it every day.

As a vegan product, it's designed as an alternative to conventional animal-derived collagen. It combines amino acids with other ingredients intended to support the body's own collagen production, including the herb gotu kola.

It also comes in a pineapple and grapefruit flavour, although we didn't test that version.

Available from: Feel (£56.43)

Vivo Life Collagen Builder, £44.99

Vivo Life Collagen

Best for: Vegan collagen builder

Star rating: 4/5

Why we chose it: This is more of an all-in-one plant-based nutrition powder than a conventional collagen supplement, combining 25g of protein with a broad range of added nutrients.

What we like

What to keep in mind

Vivo Life takes a different approach. Rather than providing collagen itself, Collagen Builder contains 25g of protein plus nutrients including vitamin C, zinc, copper, biotin and hyaluronic acid.

The chocolate flavour is rich and slightly sweet, with a smooth, shake-like texture and a mild plant-protein aftertaste.

It feels more like a functional protein powder than a typical collagen supplement, with a broader nutritional profile and strong sustainability credentials. It's not a direct substitute for an animal-derived collagen product, but it's worth considering if you want a plant-based, all-in-one approach.

Available from: Planet Organic (£44.99)

Ancient + Brave Cacao and Collagen, £28

Ancient + Brave Cacao and Collagen

Best for: Bovine collagen

Star rating: 5/5

Why we chose it: This bovine collagen stood out for its rich cacao flavour, avoiding the unpleasant taste sometimes associated with bovine collagen powders.

What we like

What to keep in mind

This option from Ancient + Brave combines bovine collagen with raw Peruvian cacao. The result is chocolatey, with deep, earthy notes and elements of spice from ingredients including cinnamon, baobab and carob.

Bovine collagen powders can sometimes have an unpleasant flavour, but we didn't find that to be an issue here. The cacao gives it a distinctive taste that's much closer to a flavoured hot drink or shake than a plain supplement.

Available from: Ancient + Brave (£28)

NaturesPlus Collagen Peptides, £24.49

NaturesPlus Collagen

Best for: Blended collagen

Star rating: 4.5/5

Why we chose it: This unflavoured powder combines collagen from several different sources and has a clean taste that works in both hot and cold drinks.

What we like

What to keep in mind

If you're looking for an unflavoured collagen to add to hot or cold drinks, this is a useful option. We found it had a crisp, clean taste without an unpleasant aftertaste.

Rather than relying on one collagen source, it combines collagen from grass-fed beef, wild-caught cod, free-range chicken and eggshell membrane.

The main downside was texture. Even after mixing it with water, we found the powder stayed a little lumpy, so it may benefit from being mixed in a high-powered blender or added to a smoothie.

Available from: Healf (£24.49)

What happens to collagen as we get older?

There's nothing magical about your 30th birthday when it comes to collagen. Rather, collagen production naturally decreases as we age, which can contribute to changes in the elasticity of skin and connective tissues.

For women in their 30s and beyond, collagen supplements can understandably become more interesting as part of a wider approach to nutrition, fitness and skincare.

The basics still matter. Eating enough protein helps provide the amino acids your body needs to make collagen, so a supplement shouldn't be seen as a replacement for a balanced diet.

What should busy mums look for in a collagen supplement?

The best collagen supplement isn't necessarily the one with the fanciest packaging or longest ingredients list. It's the one that fits comfortably into your routine.

If mornings are hectic, a ready-to-drink shot or individual sachet may be easier than measuring powder from a tub. If you already make a smoothie or have a coffee every morning, an unflavoured powder can be a more natural fit.

Taste matters, too. A supplement only represents good value if you're actually going to use it, which is why flavour and ease of preparation formed an important part of our testing.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a protein found in many different areas of the body, including connective tissues, organs, blood and bones. It is involved in essential processes including protecting the nervous system, helping wounds heal and making blood clot.

As we age, less collagen is produced in the body, which can contribute to changes in the elasticity of connective tissues and skin.

What are the different types of collagen supplements?

The products in our list include marine, bovine and plant-based collagen alternatives.

Marine collagen is derived from fish, while bovine collagen comes from cows. Vegan products don't contain conventional animal-derived collagen. Instead, they tend to combine amino acids and other nutrients intended to support the body's natural collagen production.

There are also blended collagen supplements, such as NaturesPlus Collagen Peptides, which use collagen from several different animal sources rather than relying on just one.

What is the best form of collagen to take?

Collagen supplements come in several formats, including powders, gels, shots and individual sachets. There isn't one format that will suit everyone, so the best option is likely to be the one you can fit most comfortably into your routine.

If you already make coffee or smoothies every day, a powder may be easiest. If you need something for commuting, travelling or hectic mornings, an individual sachet or ready-to-drink option might be more convenient.

How do collagen supplements work?

Many collagen supplements contain collagen from animal sources. You may see terms such as "collagen peptides" or "hydrolysed collagen" on the packaging. These refer to collagen that has been broken down into smaller peptide particles.

Vegan collagen alternatives work differently, as they don't contain conventional collagen itself. Instead, they tend to provide amino acids or other nutrients intended to support the body's natural collagen-production processes.
