In a nutshell

A long-lasting rotating car seat that makes everyday journeys easier while offering extended rear-facing use, though the deep seat and less padded fabrics may suit toddlers better than younger babies.

Pros

Cons

The Avionaut Stardust 360 is an extended rear-facing car seat with a 360° swivel function, designed for parents who want the reassurance of longer rear-facing travel with the day-to-day convenience of a rotating seat.

It can be used rear-facing up to 21kg or 125cm, while still converting into a high-back booster up to 150cm. That makes it an interesting option for families who like the idea of an all-stage rotating seat, but want to keep their child rear-facing for longer than many standard 360° car seats allow.

Priced at around £350, it sits in the middle of the all-stage rotating seat market, more expensive than the Silver Cross Motion 3 All Size 360 (£295), but cheaper than the Maxi-Cosi Emerald 360 Pro car seat (£399). However, its key point of difference is its extended rear-facing limit of 125cm/21kg, which is higher than many comparable 360° seats.

Parent tester Sophie tried the Avionaut Stardust 360 with her 15-month-old daughter in a VW Multivan, using it on daily journeys, longer car rides and school runs, as well as briefly testing the fit with older children to assess how well it adapts as children grow.

About our parent tester

Sophie tested the Avionaut Stardust 360 with her 15-month-old daughter in a VW Multivan, using it on daily journeys, longer car rides and school runs. She also briefly tested the fit with older children to assess how well the seat adapts across different stages. How easy is the Avionaut Stardust 360 to install?

As a mum of 4, I know exactly how mind-boggling car seats can be, so I was relieved to find the Avionaut Stardust 360 genuinely simple to install.

The ISOFIX bars and support leg were easy to access, and all had coloured indicators. Green means good to go, while red means try again. These are exactly the kind of simple but effective indicators busy parents need.

All in all, it took me about a minute to install the car seat. On the odd occasion we moved it from car to car, it was still quick and easy to get the indicators showing green.

How well does the Avionaut Stardust 360 rotation work?

Having never had a rotating seat before, I did wonder if the spinning feature would be a bit of a gimmick, but how wrong was I?

The rotation made it so much easier to get our little girl in and out of the seat, and I can see how it would also make switching between rear-facing and forward-facing modes simpler. However, we plan to use the seat rear-facing for as long as possible. The seat can be used rear-facing up to 21kg or 125cm.

The handle to rotate the seat is tucked underneath at the front, out of your line of sight. It’s the same handle that alters the recline, so it took a little practice to work out the correct buttons for spinning and reclining. After a few trips, though, we had cracked it and were really seeing the benefit of the spin feature, which made getting in and out of the car so much simpler for us as parents.

How comfortable is the Avionaut Stardust 360 for younger children?

I used the seat with my 15-month-old daughter. She is on the 50th centile for height and weight, and I must admit the seat did appear very deep for her. The breathable fabrics felt comfortable, but they are not what I would call soft or cosy, and the seat could definitely benefit from being more padded for longer journeys.

The harness pads were very comfortable, and it was great to see harness pads around the waist as well as on the shoulders. The button to lengthen the harness was a bit tricky to find initially, but we always found it after a few attempts, and the harness lengthened and tightened smoothly.

There are small openings on the wings of the seat that the harness buckles can be tucked into to keep the harness open while getting your child in and out. This came in very handy, especially when persuading a wriggling toddler to get strapped into their seat.

When browsing the manual, we did notice that an additional insert can be purchased to enable the Stardust 360 to be used from birth. This is something we have not tried, but the concept of a seat that could serve all stages of a child’s development seemed very handy indeed.

How well does the Avionaut Stardust 360 adapt for older children?

Finding the correct fit for our toddler was easy, as the headrest is simple and smooth to adjust. There is a palm-grip button on the back of the headrest which, when pressed, moves the headrest and harness up and down simultaneously.

Moving the headrest so that the harness straps were level with our toddler’s shoulders helped give the best fit for our little one.

We also used the seat with our friend’s 2-year-old son and 4-year-old son, and each time it was easy to achieve the correct fit. The seat itself is very deep and roomy, and works well across a range of ages.

My 8-year-old daughter used the seat in its high-back booster mode and still had plenty of growing room left.

What are the key safety features?

The Avionaut Stardust 360 appealed to us because of its extended rear-facing capability. It can be used rear-facing up to 21kg or 125cm, meaning our little girl should be able to travel rear-facing for several more years, depending on her growth.

The seat also comes with a side-impact protection block, which can be fitted to the side of the car seat nearest the car door. The support leg also helps reduce movement when the seat is installed.

For us, the combination of extended rear-facing use, ISOFIX installation, support leg, side-impact protection and easy-to-read installation indicators felt very reassuring.

What is the Avionaut Stardust 360 like for everyday use?

Day to day, the 360 spin function was a game changer when it came to getting our little girl in and out of the seat. Swivelling the seat to face the car door made buckling up quick and fuss-free. We really didn’t know how much we needed a rotating seat until we got one.

The harness was easy to adjust once we had found the button to lengthen the straps. For a seat that converts to a high-back booster and lasts until your child is 150cm tall, it is also lighter than other seats with similar features, which was a real positive when installing it or moving it from car to car.

How adjustable is the Avionaut Stardust 360?

The recline settings are operated with a palm button tucked underneath the seat, between the child’s legs. The same button also alters the spin of the seat, depending on how hard you squeeze it.

Although there are 4 recline settings when rear-facing and 3 when forward-facing, they didn’t seem all that deep to me. That being said, they always seemed comfortable for our little girl, and she dozed off and rested in the seat happily.

The headrest has 11 settings and, even with our 8 year old, still showed room for growth.

How easy is the Avionaut Stardust 360 to clean?

An easy-to-clean seat was a must-have for us, as we have learned from experience with our previous children.

The seat covers are designed to help keep the child cool, which is great for long car journeys. The breathable fabrics did seem to help keep my daughter cool, but we found them much coarser than other car seat fabrics we are used to.

The fabrics are heavily textured, meaning snack crumbs were a bit of a nightmare to spot-clean. The only effective way to clean the fabrics seemed to be removing the whole seat cover, rather than using the odd damp cloth here and there when spillages happened.

What’s in the box?

Does the Avionaut Stardust 360 have any sustainability features?

The packaging of the Stardust 360 is minimal but effective. There is one plastic carrier bag protecting the seat, and all other packaging is recyclable.

The box is sturdy, and we have kept it to store the seat in at a later date if needed.

Is the Avionaut Stardust 360 worth the money?

Although the initial outlay of the Avionaut Stardust 360 is high, it feels like amazing value for money when you consider that it can be used up to 150cm, when our child should no longer need a high-back booster.

We researched many 360 rotating seats on the market, and very few were able to offer the same combination of brand reputation, extended rear-facing use and longevity as the Stardust 360.

Having used the Avionaut Stardust 360 for a few months now, we are confident that it will serve our family until we no longer require a car seat or high-back booster for our little girl.

MadeForMums verdict

Having used the Avionaut Pixel Pro 2.0 C infant carrier as our first car seat when our little girl was a newborn, and being so satisfied with how well it performed, we were eager to move on to the Avionaut Stardust 360 for our next-stage seat.

The roomy seat, extended rear-facing capability and convenience of the 360-degree rotation mean the Avionaut Stardust 360 has not disappointed. If we were being picky, the seating position is a little deeper than we would have liked, and the heavily textured fabrics make cleaning a little tricky. However, these are small niggles that are soon brushed aside by the excellent quality of the seat’s components, the relatively light weight and its general ease of use.

The Avionaut Stardust 360 slotted seamlessly into our family life and gives us real peace of mind on every car journey.
