Launched at a lively event at the British Library as part of the National Year of Reading 2026, this year's challenge, Read to the Beat, celebrates the connection between stories and songs, encouraging children to explore books in ways that feel personal, creative and fun.

The annual initiative, delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with public libraries across the UK, aims to help children maintain reading confidence during the long summer break while offering families free activities and resources.

What is the Summer Reading Challenge 2026?

The 2026 Summer Reading Challenge officially begins with Super Sign-Up Saturday on 4 July.

Created in partnership with Universal Music Group UK, the Read to the Beat theme highlights how both music and reading can inspire imagination, creativity and self-expression.

For the first time, children taking part will be encouraged to set their own personalised reading goals. Rather than following a single route through the challenge, participants can tailor their experience around their interests, whether that's discovering a new genre, trying audiobooks, exploring poetry or picking up graphic novels.

Each child who takes part will also receive a special edition of Storytime magazine featuring musical activities, games and stories.

Which books are featured in this year's challenge?

A range of children's titles will be spotlighted as part of Read to the Beat, including:

The selection reflects the challenge's focus on storytelling, music and creativity.

Why libraries play an important role for families

The Summer Reading Challenge is delivered through public libraries across the UK, giving families access to free books, activities and community events throughout the school holidays.

For many parents looking for low-cost ways to keep children entertained over the summer, local libraries continue to provide accessible spaces where children can read, learn and take part in creative activities.

Throughout the holidays, authors, musicians and celebrity ambassadors will also visit libraries around the country for free family events linked to the challenge.

Families could win a Camp Bestival experience

As an added incentive, one participating family will be entered into a national prize draw to win a family ticket for two adults and two children to Camp Bestival 2027.

The prize also includes travel and food vouchers for the festival weekend.

Each participating library authority will run its own local entry process before nominating entries for the national draw.

What organisers say about Read to the Beat

Sharlotte Ritchie, Senior Director of Global Impact & Communications at Universal Music Group, said the launch highlighted the shared benefits of reading and music for children.

Through our partnership with The Reading Agency, we're proud to support the Read to the Beat theme and highlight the powerful connection between music and reading. Both have the ability to spark imagination, creativity and self-expression, and we hope this summer inspires even more children and families to discover the joy of reading.

Sharlotte Ritchie, Senior Director of Global Impact & Communications, Universal Music Group

Ritchie added: "It was fantastic to see so many young people, families, authors and performers come together at the British Library to celebrate the launch of this year's Summer Reading Challenge."

"The powerful connection between music and reading" is at the heart of this year's campaign, which organisers hope will inspire more children to pick up a book and discover reading for pleasure during the summer holidays.
