Parents across London are being warned that unvaccinated children could be temporarily excluded from school as measles cases rise in the capital.

Health officials say pupils who are not fully vaccinated and are identified as close contacts of a confirmed case may be asked to stay off school for up to 21 days, in line with national guidance. The move is designed to limit the spread of the highly contagious virus and protect vulnerable children.

The latest concern centres on north London, where dozens of cases have been recorded in the borough of Enfield. Below, we explain what parents need to know and share the full list of schools in Enfield.

Why could unvaccinated pupils be excluded?

Asking unvaccinated close contacts to remain at home during a measles outbreak is standard public health practice.

At least 34 children in Enfield have contracted measles so far this year, according to the UK Health Security Agency, and a number have been sent to hospital.

Dr Jo Sauvage, chief medical officer of North Central London Integrated Care Board, said outbreaks do “happen in pockets across the country”.

However, she added on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Certainly in our area we've not seen an increase in number of this degree before.”

She said around 60 suspected cases had been confirmed locally, with most linked to schools and nurseries. Some children have required hospital treatment, “particularly those who have not been immunised”.

“We've been working closely to contain the infection, the spread, but also increase public knowledge and awareness,” she said.

A local GP surgery has confirmed infections in “at least” seven schools across Enfield and neighbouring Haringey.

What are the symptoms of measles?

Measles spreads easily through coughs and sneezes, or by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.

Common symptoms include:

Small white spots can appear inside the mouth. A blotchy red or brown rash usually develops after a few days, often starting behind the ears and on the face before spreading across the body.

While many children recover fully, measles can lead to serious complications, especially in babies and those with weakened immune systems.

MMR vaccination rates in Enfield

Health leaders say low uptake of the MMR vaccine is a key factor behind outbreaks.

In 2024 to 2025, just 64.3% of five-year-olds in Enfield had received both doses of the MMR vaccine, significantly below the 95% coverage needed to prevent outbreaks and one of the lowest rates in the country.

National uptake was 84.4% that year, down from 88.8% a decade ago.

The UK recently lost its World Health Organisation measles elimination status after more than 2,900 cases were confirmed in England in 2024, the highest level for over ten years. There were nearly 1,000 cases in 2025.

Dr Ellie Cannon, a GP in north London, said this was the first time she had seen measles at her surgery in her 20-year career.

“We've definitely got an issue with children being vaccinated and it certainly needs to improve as we've seen with this outbreak,” she told BBC Breakfast.

She added: “We talk a lot about vaccine refusers and conspiracy theorists, but most people are probably just what we call vaccine hesitant.”

Dr Sauvage said it was important to speak directly with families to “dispel any concerns they have about side effects or problems with the vaccine, which is safe”.
