In a nutshell

We had no disruptions or leaking in these nappies, so they are an excellent overnight choice, and the well-designed app is filled with science-led information about baby’s sleep – but it could be more useful in places.

Pampers Baby-Dry Nappy Pants offer all-round leakage protection for both day and night, whatever position your little one gets into. The Stop & Protect System incorporates wider leg cuffs to prevent leaks around the legs and a pocket to help stop them at the back, a 360° flexible waist design that contours to your baby’s body, and a super-absorbent core offering up to 12 hours of protection. Like all Pampers nappy pants, they tear down the sides for speedy removal, then roll up and secure with the tape at the back for easy disposal.

Meanwhile, the Smart Sleep Coach app by Pampers is designed to help your baby sleep better by analysing their current patterns and sleeping behaviour, as well as other factors such as room lighting. After an initial 3-minute assessment, it provides a tailored sleep plan designed specifically for your newborn, baby or toddler to guide you through proven strategies and tips to improve their sleep patterns.

Backed by experts and based on science, the app offers guidance, information and plenty of reassurance in a clear, concise way, along with a free 7-day trial.

About our parent tester Charlotte is a lifestyle journalist with 2 young children, so she has 5 years of experience with nappy changes and sleep challenges. She tested the Pampers Baby-Dry Nappies and Smart Sleep Coach with her 11-month-old daughter, Lexi, who sleeps through the night but often leaks. She trialled the nappies over 7 consecutive nights at home and thoroughly explored the app’s advice and features, comparing it to her previous extensive experience with creating a successful sleep plan.

How easy was the Pampers Smart Sleep Coach to set up?

It took a few hours to set up because my Android phone seemingly wasn’t compatible with the app initially. I eventually had to contact support, but they dealt with it quickly.

During setup, the app asked me how old Lexi was, what our routine was, what we wanted to achieve and what her sleeping conditions were currently like (i.e. blackout blinds, white noise machine etc.). It was all very easy to understand.

What sleep guidance did the app give you?

You have to input all the times your baby is asleep, then it will generate suggested nap times based on that, factoring in previous data to determine how long the ‘wake windows’ should be.

When I explored the sleep advice section on the app, it was almost exactly the same as when I used a private sleep coach 5 years ago. It was reassuring to see the approach is probably quite universal, so if I was a new parent using this app, I would likely have had just as much success. There was more detail than I expected, and the ‘knowledge centre’ section has tons of advice, too.

However, while the schedule summarised Lexi’s patterns really clearly, I would have liked more specific guidance on how much sleep she needed in the day and why, and how this would change over the months. There are general sections about day naps, but I felt this part wasn’t personalised quite enough.

Overall, the app was really supportive and encouraging. You can select whether you want to go straight in with a fast, effective approach to sleep planning or take a slower, more gentle approach. I think the latter would appeal to parents who want better sleep but are nervous about setting sleep schedules and don’t like the idea of leaving their baby to cry. Plus, there’s loads of reassurance and prompts to check how you’re doing.

How easy were the Pampers Baby-Dry Nappy Pants to use overnight?

The nappies fitted Lexi well around her legs, hips and waist, and the material was softer than supermarket brands we usually use. The tear-down sides are really useful when doing changes, although we didn’t use the pull-tab function at the back. The lower part of the nappy felt a bit bulky to me, though it didn’t seem to bother Lexi.

I think it was easier to pull on the pants when Lexi is standing, but she’s not very confident with that yet, so I would opt for the fastening nappies next time, until she’s able to stand for longer. But essentially, they were not hard to pull on.

How absorbent were the nappies overnight?

Lexi stayed 100% dry, with no leaks and no need for changing in the night. It performed much better than our usual nappy.

Did the nappies seem comfortable?

Yes, there were no red marks, irritation or rubbing. They didn’t restrict her movement, and she didn’t wake up due to wetness or discomfort in the night.

Did the Smart Sleep Coach change your bedtime routine?

Our nighttime routine didn’t change because it didn’t need to, but the app suggested a slight change to the length and time of Lexi’s afternoon naps. It said they should be closer to 2pm than 1pm, but I found she was exhausted by 1.15pm, so really needed to go down around then. It would have been useful for me to have an explanation of why they assessed the nap times like that.

The app did help us become a bit more consistent though, and it was very easy to follow the plan alongside real family life.

Did sleep improve within 7 days?

While we didn’t need improvement with Lexi’s overnight sleep, I think this app would have worked well if we had, because there’s so much information on it.

How well did the nappies and app work together?

The dryness and sleep coaching did feel like a useful combined solution, but the nappies had more impact for us. They solved the problem of Lexi’s overnight leaks.

What would you have wanted to know before trying them?

The app is definitely more compatible with Apple than Android. It’s also quite a lot of work to read everything and input all the data required, but worth it if you truly want to master good sleep for your baby.

The nappies are premium but also come with a premium price**. And because the app is American, some of the references are American. For example, it measures milk in ounces rather than millilitres, which I think is something to be aware of.

Is the combination worth it?

The combination is great, but you don’t necessarily need to use them together. You may have a bad sleeper who still stays dry through the night, or vice versa. They do two different jobs. The app is specifically for advice around better sleep. Meanwhile, the nappies are great for preventing overnight leakages, so if that’s your problem, this could certainly improve sleep.

MadeForMums verdict

I would recommend the nappies and the app as a combination but also individually, as I don’t think one necessarily needs the other – it all depends on your specific issue.

Lexi was definitely more comfortable in the night with these nappies, and I would go to use this app as the first point of help in future, if we encountered serious sleep issues. For us at the moment, the nappy made the biggest difference. But I also know that baby sleep habits change all the time, so I will be experimenting with this app again in future, I’m sure!

The app is great for any parents who are struggling with their baby’s sleep but also might have hesitations around sleep-training. I think there are a lot of myths around it and this app helpfully dispels many of them. It offers a lot of information and reassurance from what felt like really trustworthy, reliable sources.

I didn’t find this to be a miracle fix for us, but every parent, baby and situation is different. It’s great that you get a week’s trial for free to play around and test it out before deciding if you want to commit – and even then, the price is reasonable.
